Despite the nonsensical misogynistic ramblings of Pat Robertson and others, it is long past the point where there is any notion that the woman must have done something to provoke her partner. Even if that is the case it does not give you the option to strike another regardless of the self control required. Walk away. Domestic violence does not happen in a vacuum and innocent children and their tender psyche's are fragmented for a very long time. I am proud to be a member of Amnesty International.
